Contains the following types of materials: photographs, photo albums. Covers the following time period: 1931-1966. Contains photographs of the following military unit and organization: United States Ordnance Corps. General description of the collection: The Joseph M. Colby photograph collection apart from portrait photos and photos of various staff, is replete with photos dealing with research and development of tanks and other tracked vehicles. There are photos of prototypes and testing at Aberdeen Proving Ground, the Chrysler Engineering Division and General Motors Corporation Proving Grounds. There are photos of engines and other tank parts and the manufacturing of those items. Included also are photos of Mrs. George S. Patton Jr., dedicating the Patton tank, and finally some photos of rockets, rocketry, and several photos of the first moon walk. This collection is a treasure trove of material on tanks from 1933 to the 1950s. In many of the photos, General Jacob Devers is seen.

Jacob Loucks Devers (1887-1979) was born in York, Pennsylvania. After graduating from West Point in 1909, he commissioned in the artillery. During World War I, he temporarily achieved the rank of colonel, while on staff with the School of Fire. He graduated from Command and General Staff School in 1925 and the Army War College in 1933. Joseph Milton Colby was a graduate of the United States Military Academy (USMA), Class of 1929. He was assigned to the Ordnance Corps, a branch he remained with throughout his career. Colby was cited as being responsible for the design and development of the Grant, Lee, Sherman, Chaffee, Walker Bulldog, Hellcat, Pershing, and Patton tanks. He was also the developer of a variety of other armored vehicles and many self-propelled artillery weapons. Colby retired as a Brigadier General in 1959. ...
